Like Ian,
photoshop and lots of images to create depth and movement.
Also use flash for some vector stuff if needed.. I have Illustrator but I cant figure the damn thing out.. The comp in the other room has lightwave, bryce and sopme other stuff that I can use if needed for 3d stuff, but this comp is so old it wont run the big 3d renderers.

photoshop, painter - god I love this program, coreldraw/illustrator, auto-illustrator, 3ds max, typestry 2.03... those are my usual suspects...

yes. especially if you have a tablet... using a mouse with it sorta sucks, but as a person that'd rather paint/sketch than use a computer... painter is aweseome. The interface takes a bit to get used to though, but it has layers and what not just like Photoshop, as well as full support for photoshop's layers.
it's just... dunno. I just like the natural media brushes in it.
even supports video too! yeah... I know, I sound like a painter salesperson; however, I've been using it since version 2.0... almost as long as I've been using photoshop - which I've used since 2.5...

Gerbick - mmmm - I'm just about to get a tablet, I may have to extend the budget a little (an early xmas prezzie ) - you're the fifth person who I've spoken to who rates it.

painter is cool, but only if you have a tablet, it would be terrible without one.
though, i've only got classic (came w/ my wacom), might be different in the newer versions.

heeey... another canvas user
andy, are you asking about programs because you are planning to buy something new, or just out of interest?
i think you get the idea that photoshop is definitely the preferred option, as it has heaps of depth and pretty much does most things that you want... I haven't personally used painter but i guess it's fairly cool as well
however, as you note, there are some of us that use other progs and i think that as long as your app has the standard image tools and layer capabilities, you can make some fairly cool stuff, but perhaps not the really complex effects
i find that for me, the most limiting factor is my imagination, not the program i use
